#1 – Should not live with relatives
There are a lot of international students such as Vietnamese students who tend to live with their relatives in the early days of arriving Australia. While there are several advantages of living with relatives, from what I have experienced, I believe that disadvantages outweigh advantages.
As we know, in the case of living with family when studying overseas, it is possible for international students to live in the safe area that they can be taken care of sufficiently by their family. Moreover, their living costs, including accommodation, food, public transport, and so forth, are not too exorbitant to live unless they live without family.
Just as living with family has several benefits, it also has some drawbacks. Improving the second language, for example, is one of the difficulties that they have to experience for a long time because it is common for their aunt, uncle, and other members of the family to communicate with them by using the native language that makes their relatives comfortable when talking to each other. Besides that, it is possible that overseas students will feel isolated due to the lack of friends, resulting in the shortage of happiness that drives them bored. Because of living in the safe area, it is difficult for them to build the independent living habit that helps a lot in the future. Further, it is impossible for overseas students who tend to live with their family to gain experiences about culture and lifestyle from other students who come from other countries. These are likely to have positive impacts on their future career due to the development of the multicultural world. Moreover, their relatives sometimes have the negative speech that affects their motivation negatively.
As a result, living with family is less advantageous than with overseas friends. In my opinion, it is important for international students to live with friends who are from other nations so that they can acquire many advantages as possible.
#2 – Try to learn English well as possible before studying overseas
There is no doubt that English is the universal language that is used for work and study. Therefore, trying to learn English well as possible is one of the most popular suggests for students before moving to Australia for studying. From what I have experienced, I definitely agree with this suggestion.
There are some reasons for my agreement. First of all, it is necessary for students to use English for both study and work. The majority of part-time jobs, for example, require candidates that they have to use English fluently before dropping out the resume. Moreover, because of the multinational country, there are a lot of students who are from China, Japan, India, and other countries. Therefore, using English fluently is one of the elements that help them communicate with each other and make more friends. On the other hand, unless students try to learn English before coming to Australia, it is possible for them to register some English courses here. However, the majority of teachers who instruct English are not from Australia. It means they are not native speakers although it is possible for them to use English professionally. As a result, it may be difficult for students to catch up with ideas when Australian native speakers make the conversation with them although it is possible for students to use English fluently after finishing the courses. Nevertheless, because Australia is the multinational country, not only the Australian but also people who come from other nations are able to talk to each other. Therefore, it is up to students decide whether they register the English courses or not.
In my view, it is important for students to try to learn English well before they decide to go overseas for studying because it helps them save a lot of money and time that are able to be used for other things instead of paying for English courses.
