First of all, I’d like to say sorry to my readers because I’ve stopped publishing for 2 weeks. The reason is that I was busy to deal with a ton of assignments and working tasks. However, I’m a bit free now since I just finished most of my assignments a few days ago and I’m in public holidays now. Therefore, I decided to blog again. Hopefully, you guys like this post.
Today, I want to share with you about some behaviors you should have in the tech industry. I take this knowledge from my working experience in the tech company.
1. Be patient and keep learning:
This behavior should be in your first priority if you want to be successful in the tech industry. This is because there are a ton of opportunities in this industry. However, you can never know when the opportunity comes and knocks your door. It might be tonight or tomorrow or the next 3 months or more than that. That’s why you need to be patient. There is a quote from Milton Berle that I really like and it suits this topic – “If the opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door”. Being patient is not something like you sit there and wait for the opportunity, but you keep learning to make yourself get closer to it. You need to try to “build a door” until the opportunity comes and knocks it. Otherwise, it will knock a door that is built by another person. Importantly, the opportunity doesn’t wait for anyone. That’s why you shouldn’t stop improving your knowledge until you see the opportunity. Imagine that you’re familiar with a particular programming language like C. Since you haven’t got any projects to work on, you keep learning another popular programming language like Python. Contingently, your friend asks you to join his project and the project somehow uses Python as its standard. Fortunately, you’re able to take the project because you already have the knowledge of using Python. That is the power of this behavior. Not only does the opportunity come to you contingently, but it also goes away from you in a tick. Hence, you need to prepare yourself daily to catch it.
2. Be willing to listen to the feedback from the senior:
This behavior should be in your second priority in order to be successful in the tech industry. This is because it shows that you’re willing to learn from the feedback even it’s negative or positive feedback. In the tech industry, it’s good if you’re able to learn independently, but it will be better if you’re able to learn and listen to the feedback from your colleagues as well. Even you sometimes receive some negative feedback from your senior, you shouldn’t take it personally. Instead of that, you should treat it as a chance to improve yourself. If your senior or your colleagues keep giving you feedback, it means that they still care of you and they want you to be better. Therefore, you should respect those people who always give you feedback while working. If you show up that you’re not willing to listen to the feedback, no one will give you that anymore. This leads to the fact that your improvement will be limited at a particular point in the growth line. There is a quote from Bill Gates that I really like and it suits this topic – “We all need people who will give us feedback. That’s how we improve”.
3. Learn from your mistakes:
This is another behavior that helps you succeed in the tech industry. This is because you cannot improve without making mistakes. Making mistakes in the tech industry is normal, but the important thing is what you learn from a mistake you make. Therefore, if you make a mistake while working, you should be calm and take that as a chance to improve yourself. Moreover, you can share with your colleagues the knowledge taken from a mistake you make. Since you’re willing to share your knowledge with your colleagues, they’re willing to share their knowledge back to you. That’s how our societies evolve. Not only do we learn from our mistakes, but we also learn from the mistake made by other people in our societies. Many people say that you need to be innovative in order to succeed in the tech industry. But the secret of being innovative is learning from mistakes. This is because mistakes lead to innovation, and innovation drives growth. No one criticizes a person who is willing to learn from his/her mistakes. Hence, if you show up that you’re willing to learn from your mistakes, everyone will help you by giving you feedback. Making mistakes is painful, learning from your mistakes is extremely painful, but there is no gain without pain.
I will share more about this topic in the future. Hopefully, you enjoy this topic.
